EDF Energy and EWS Energy announce new long term coal train contract

EWS Energy has been awarded a new long term contract from EDF Energy to deliver coal trains to its major power stations at Cottam and West Burton.

The £50 million agreement builds on the previous contract between the EDF Energy and EWS Energy.

As part of the new contract, EWS Energy will operate trains hauling over 1,600 tonnes of coal per train movement. Thousands of trains will be operated over the lifetime of the contract. The coal will be collected from a number of different coal mines and ports in the North East and East Midlands.

Paul Bates, EWS Energy Managing Director, said: “EDF Energy is a major part of Britain’s electricity supply industry and I am delighted that they have selected EWS Energy to continue operating coal trains for them. We are pleased to be a major player in their supply chain and look to further enhancing our service provision for them.”

The new contract from EDF Energy follows the recent award of a contract to EWS Energy by RWE npower.
